Experience

Mark Fernandes joined Sierra Ventures in 2002 from Merrill Lynch where he was a Director in equity research covering software companies. Mark began his career as part of the founding team of an early stage display company before joining Seagate Technology as a Product Manager. He subsequently worked for Cisco Systems as a Product Manager and continued his affiliation with Cisco while he earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. Following Harvard, he joined Robertson Stephens as a Research Analyst before being recruited by Merrill Lynch. Mark's primary investment focus is infrastructure software and the consumer Internet. Among the portfolio companies he has worked with in the past are FrontBridge (acquired by Microsoft), Sourcefire (Nasdaq: FIRE), Net6 (acquired by Citrix), Opalis Software (acquired by Microsoft), Permeo (acquired by Blue Coat Systems), uGenie (acquired by Lulu) and DynamicOps (acquired by VMware). He is actively working with Elasticbox, Nexgate, Kinnek, Runnable, Spotzer Media Group, Ooyala and thismoment.

Education & Background

Born in Mumbai, India, Mark holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Mangalore University, a MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and a MBA from Harvard University. He also works with the India Literacy Project, helping the non-profit organization secure greater exposure and raise additional funds to improve literacy in India.
